Iceland Prays: Community and Faith Leaders Pray for Humanity amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

Félag Horizon is hosting an inclusive unifying moment of prayer for humanity amid the COVID-19 pandemic with the participation from community and faith leaders from Iceland on 30th April 2020 at 1 pm-1:45 pm.

Community hubs and places of worship are forced to close their doors in an attempt to help contain the spread of the coronavirus, we believe in facilitating an inclusive unifying moment of prayer for humanity. As many of our community members are left distraught at the escalating cases, we are also reminded of the altruism displayed by many volunteers and essential workers - and would like to thank them for their extended compassion.

Unified by prayer, we hope to reflect hope during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ashura (Noah's Pudding) 2015

Félag Horizon and Neskirkja arrange the annual Ashura event (Noah's Pudding) in Neskirkja in the 28th November 2015. This is the third year that the event will be arranged and the event features different speeches about dialogue and coexistence, Sema performance (Whirling Dervishes), Ebru-art show (water marbeling), aperatif food and tasting the traditional Ashura ('Noah's Pudding').

Water Marbling (Ebru)

Félag Horizon arranges a course in water marbling or "Ebru" which is one of the most unique and beautiful forms of Turkish art. Ebru is formed by drawing designs with dye on top of the water and then carefully placing the paper on the surface of the water in order to absorb the dye. The earliest examples of Ebru are found in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and are dated 1539, Ebru has traditionally been rarely signed, and therefore many great artists remain unnamed. Modern day students may study for more than 10 years before being considered master marblers, learning how to make the perfect dye, water bath, and design. Since each dye bath can only be transferred to paper once, every original piece of Ebru is unique.

International Cooking Lessons

In November Félag Horizon will start a so-called ”international cooking course” where people are able to learn how to cook in different ways and by using inspirations from different countries in the world. The Meaning of Food is an exploration of culture through food. What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, who’s at the table, and who eats first is a form of communication that is rich with meaning.

Photo Contest

Félag Horizon will be holding a photo contest about a specific topic which Félag Horizon will decide to put up. Everybody has their own unique chance to challenge their spacious intelligence and the winner of the competition will win a prize.

Pangea Olympics

Pangea is a reputed competition organized in 12 European countries and now for the first time being held in Iceland by Félag Horizon. The Maths Olympics is a fun and challenging competition for primary and secondary students. These competitions bring together students of like interests and abilities, allowing them to form their own community in which they will in friendship, inspiration, and encouragement to a far greater degree than most of the students can find in the typical classroom. Beyond encouraging an interest in mathematics, contests help prepare students for competition and helps them develop the ability to think about and solve complex problems.
